Cushing's disease in dogs caused by steroids

The pituitary gland is the “boss”, so to speak, of the endocrine system. Its main responsibility is for producing hormones which control the various other endocrine glands in the body. The growth of a tumor in either gland causes an over-production of corticosteroid hormones which, when released into the system, produce symptoms such as hair loss. (The over-use of steroid drugs can have the same effect.) Other symptoms (in both dogs and horses) can include sweating, weight loss (in spite of increased appetite), listlessness, increased intake of water, and anemia. However, the most recognizable symptom is hair loss.

Left untreated, Cushing's disease will progress and can lead to life-threatening disorders such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, and liver and kidney failure, and to chronic maladies such as hypothyroidism and infections of the skin, ears, gums, eyes, or bladder. If your pet exhibits any of the early signs of Cushing's and is six years old or older, make an appointment with your vet right away. Pituitary Cushing's disease cannot be cured, but the treatments available can prolong your pet's quality of life and keep him around for years longer. If an adrenal tumor is causing the disease, surgery may be indicated. Either way, it's better to get started on treatment.

While on medication for Cushing’s disease, it becomes extremely difficult for the dog to digest high fiber foods properly. Although fibers more or less are present in all types of foods, it is importance to avoid foods which are high in both fibers and carbohydrates like home-cooked rice and vegetables. Hence, even if your dog is on raw food or a natural food diet, you can reduce the the amount of fiber that goes into their body by giving them shredded vegetables. Shredded vegetables and fruits are comparatively low in fibers and also provide the dog with a fat-free diet.

A few natural products vie for the Canine Cushing’s market. You mentioned Supraglan and Cushex, neither of which am I qualified to talk about although I’m sure they are fine products.
